This course provides a structured pathway designed to strengthen hospital-based care for patients with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). Through a blend of virtual training, expert faculty guidance, case-based learning, and course-based implementation activities, hospital teams will build practical, evidence-based workflows to strengthen patient experience, improve early identification and treatment, support safe discharge planning, and integrate MOUD into routine inpatient care. Participants will complete asynchronous course assignments designed to reinforce key concepts, support real-time practice change, and prepare each site for long-term adoption and sustainability.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, participants will:
- Apply evidence-based approaches to identify, engage, and treat hospitalized patients with SUD/OUD, including the use of stigma-reduction strategies, trauma-informed care principles, and best-practice screening workflows.
- Design and implement site-specific clinical workflows that support MOUD initiation, enhance coordination between inpatient and emergency departments, and strengthen transitions to outpatient and community-based care.
- Evaluate organizational readiness and system-level barriers to delivering effective inpatient SUD services, and develop sustainable plans using QI tools, policy improvements, and cross-team collaboration.
Course Structure
This course is self-paced and available to any user who registers with the Maine Medical Association, Center for Quality Improvement Learning Lab. The course consists of multiple sub-sections or units and will contain various elements, including pre- and post-tests, video lessons, and hyperlinks to readings and web resources.

Note: This course is divided into short digestible units (10-20 mins) that can be completed in small increments.

Assessment and Grading
This course begins with a pre-test that will test your knowledge and allow you to gauge your baseline understanding of the topics to be covered. Your pre-test score will not count toward your overall grade. At the end of the module, there is a post-test that will determine your final grade. A comparison of your pre-test score and post-test score will help to assess how much knowledge you’ve gained. You will have three attempts to complete the post-test. Your score must be 75% or better in order to receive the 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Please complete the evaluation survey at the conclusion of the learning module.

Complete the Survey Monkey evaluation at the end of the course
Upon completion of the evaluation in Survey Monkey, including the required demographic information, a CME Certificate will be emailed to M.D.s and D.O.s and a CME Certificate of Participation will be emailed to all other learners. These certificates will be emailed within 10 business days of completing the evaluation.
