This self-paced online course equips healthcare professionals with clinical knowledge and tools to recognize, diagnose, and manage infection-associated chronic conditions. These include long COVID, chronic Lyme disease, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), and dysautonomia. Each condition is explored in depth, with a focus on symptom management, interdisciplinary collaboration, patient-centered communication, and system-level challenges. The module addresses common clinical overlaps, stigma, and the evolving evidence base to support effective, equitable care.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, participants will:
- Describe the clinical features, diagnostic approaches, and management considerations for five infection-associated chronic conditions: long COVID, chronic Lyme disease, ME/CFS, POTS, and dysautonomia.
- Apply trauma-informed, stigma-sensitive communication strategies to support patients navigating complex, persistent, and often misunderstood chronic conditions.
- Identify interdisciplinary referral pathways and system-level strategies to improve continuity of care and reduce disparities for patients with post-infectious chronic illness.
Course Structure
This course is self-paced and available to any user who registers with the Maine Medical Association, Center for Quality Improvement Learning Lab. The course consists of multiple sub-sections or units and will contain various elements, including video lessons, hyperlinks to readings and web resources, and pre-and post-tests for you to gauge your knowledge and understanding of the course topic.

A comparison of your pre-test score and post-test score will help you assess how much knowledge you’ve gained on the topic.

- Complete all the units within the course
- Complete the Survey Monkey evaluation at the end of the course
Upon completion of the evaluation in Survey Monkey, including the required demographic information, a CME Certificate will be emailed to M.D.s and D.O.s and a CME Certificate of Participation will be emailed to all other learners. These certificates will be emailed within 10 business days of completing the evaluation.
